Enhancing Neonatal and Maternal Care in Northern Pakistan: IHPA NICU Team’s Impactful Visit

A team of Ismaili healthcare professionals visited Aga Khan Hospital Gilgit (AKH G) to enhance neonatal and maternal care in Northern Pakistan, with additional support from a remote multidisciplinary team. The visit aimed to improve newborn discharge practices, reduce neonatal readmissions, enhance postpartum care, promote breastfeeding, and introduce advanced neonatal respiratory strategies such as bubble CPAP.

To strengthen care for medically complex neonates, the team conducted neonatal resuscitation training, integrated new medical equipment, and assessed current practices to identify challenges and opportunities for improvement. They also introduced antenatal counseling by a neonatal pediatrician for high-risk pregnancies, fostering hope and reassurance among expectant mothers.

The IHPA NICU team continues to provide remote support for training, clinical case management, and the implementation of maternal-neonatal health strategies, contributing to improved health outcomes in the region served by Aga Khan Health Services Pakistan.
