Strengthening Healthcare: Farzana Madhani and Zohra Ali Lead Dialysis Education Project in Pakistan
Farzana Madhani and Zohra Ali, two dedicated Ismaili health professionals, returned to their alma mater in Pakistan in September 2024 to lead the Dialysis Support and Education project. This collaborative effort was made possible through a partnership between AKHB USA and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), including Aga Khan University (AKU) Karachi and Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) Pakistan.
Their return to the nursing school was a deeply meaningful and reflective experience. Walking through the familiar corridors brought back memories of their time as students and evoked a strong sense of gratitude and responsibility. The institution, which had equipped them with the foundation of knowledge and skills they rely on today, became the backdrop for passing on their expertise to a new generation of healthcare professionals. Their connection to these roots and their commitment to giving back guided every step of the journey.
The teams at AKU Karachi and AKHS Gilgit welcomed Farzana and Zohra with warmth and hospitality. Staff members went out of their way to accommodate their needs, ensuring they had the resources and support necessary to carry out their work effectively. The openness of the staff to new ideas, their engagement in meaningful discussions, and their encouragement created a collaborative and supportive environment that made the assignment both productive and rewarding.
Throughout their time at AKU and AKHS, Farzana and Zohra witnessed the staff’s growing curiosity, confidence, and understanding. By sharing best practices, introducing new equipment, and reinforcing core principles, they contributed to improving patient care and healthcare delivery in a region they hold dear. However, their efforts extended beyond technical skills. Their work focused on empowering others, fostering resilience, and cultivating pride among the staff.
Their hope is that these efforts will continue to benefit patients, healthcare teams, and the broader community for years to come. Farzana and Zohra consider it a privilege to have contributed to such a meaningful initiative and expressed their gratitude for the chance to serve in this capacity.
